Lieu Science Endowment Supports Unique Hands-On Student Experiences and More

Bay Discovery Voyage

When they established the Dr. David Lieu ’73 & Dr. Diana Lieu Science Endowment Fund with their $100,000 gift in 2004, David and Diana had three objectives: supporting summer enrichment opportunities for Lowell students who have overcome hardships, supporting Lowell science teachers, and enhancing Science department programs.

One of the most exciting programs the Lieu Fund has underwritten is the annual Bay Discovery Voyages with the Marine Science Institute. Over the past ten years, nearly 2,500 Lowell students have participated in four-hour expeditions on San Francisco Bay aboard the R.V. Robert G. Brownlee, a 90-foot research vessel. Students conduct hands-on experiments and investigations that help them learn more about local marine life. These experiences would not have been possible without the $25,000 in funding provided by the Lieu Endowment over the past decade.

Thanks to continued contributions from the Lieus and investment growth, the Lieu Endowment has exceeded $250,000 while granting scholarships for talented students to attend special summer math and science camps and funding important science class equipment—including computers, lab tables, and an ice machine. Most recently, the Lieu Fund purchased new Advanced Placement Environmental Science textbooks.

As a perpetual endowment, the Lieu Fund will continue to support science education at Lowell for generations to come thanks to the generosity and foresight of Dr. David Lieu and his wife, Dr. Diana Lieu.
