Joseph Ehrman and Joan Catelli Extend Their Support for Students

Joseph Ehrman and Joan Catelli

After long and successful careers devoted to supporting Lowell students, two beloved alums have generously extended their commitment to Lowell through their planned giving.

Joseph Ehrman III F’40, who began his 30-year tenure at Lowell as a teacher but was known to most students and colleagues as Dean of Students, passed away last October. Mr. Ehrman also served as a director and long-time treasurer of the Lowell Alumni Association. His generous gift will establish the perpetual Joseph Ehrman Memorial Scholarship to assist students with college tuition and other expenses. In keeping with Joe’s 85 years as a Boy Scout (friends will fondly recall his personalized license plate that read “Troop 14”), recipients of the Ehrman Scholarship will be Eagle Scouts. Mr. Ehrman is survived by his wife and fellow alum Diane Roth Ehrman F’43.

Joan Catelli ’61, who passed away last December, also served Lowell students for 30 years (1975 to 2005), first as a Spanish teacher and then as a dedicated and compassionate counselor, following in her mother Elena’s footsteps. For a continuous span of 57 years, mother and daughter helped Lowell students grapple with a myriad of academic and personal issues—always with exceptional sensitivity and kindness. The Joan Catelli Memorial Scholarship will now join the Elena Catelli Memorial Scholarship as part of our annual scholarship program, thereby providing us an opportunity to remind ourselves and future generations of Lowellites of their perpetual dedication to assisting students.

Friends and fellow alumni can honor the lives of Mr. Ehrman and Ms. Catelli by making donations to the Lowell Alumni Association to supplement their scholarship funds.
